American Idol Carly Smithson Eliminated

We tend to forget that American Idol is nothing more than a popularity contest, but our memories just got jogged by the exit of Carly Smithson from the competition. All that singing is just an entertaining distraction from what’s really going on. Further confirming this fact is that she was joined in the bottom two by the best performer of Andrew Lloyd Webber night and perennial bottom-dweller, Syesha Mercado.
Thank goodness the presumably most popular ones, the two Davids who have never found themselves at the bottom just yet, do actually have a smidgen of talent in them. Heaven forbid someone like Jason Castro, the most maddeningly laid-back AI finalist ever that it’s already insulting, would find himself crowned American Idol come May. It’ll be Season 5 all over again, when a cheesy, white-haired epileptic who did nothing more than imitate Joe Cocker won.
Here’s a video of Carly’s Top 6 performance, so you can be reminded that on American Idol, performing well doesn’t really count.
